Wiry Great Blue Heron

I have been wanting to try the technique of using wire as a visual element in my sculptures for a while but this is the first time I have done it. The down side is that when the wires are fired they stain the surrounding clay a dark grey/black. For this piece that was not much of a problem but it has made me consider adding the wires after the ceramic elements are done. It would also mean that they would not get so fragile and prone to metal fatigue as they are after firing and I could use less expensive wires. Wire that does not melt in the kiln is somewhat pricey.

In this piece I added a cold finish to the wires and also partially covered the stained clay. I am quite happy with the results and will experiment with when I add the wires in future pieces.
