Big Eared Bat

This wall hung bat sculpture uses Nishima to inlay slip in the black wings to reveal the veins in the wings. When viewed in the right light they take on almost a lacey quality with the network of vessels that supply the stretchy skin. I added a considerable amount of burgundy underglaze so the redness of the wings would show through but the dark clay often burns out underglaze so I will have to be more generous next time.

The animal represented is Townsend’s Big Eared Bat. It is an insect eater and it’s large ears are used to receive the bounced back sounds it uses to navigate and hunt while flying at night.
