I love these recyclers who make balls of dung that they cart off to bury and lay eggs in. They are in the scarab family. Many of the Egyptian beauties also collect dung. They push and form their balls while marching backwards and use the spikes on their limbs and face to get good leverage when encountering an obstacle. This beetle is posed backwards as she pushes her small ball of dung along. In reality the balls are often many times the size of the beetle.
She is another one of my pieces that is assembled from different parts. Each leg contains 3 sections and the body also has 3 parts. The legs are hollow & are strung together with a sort of elastic to give flexibility and keep the pieces snug together. The addition of wire allow for the limbs to stay in position when posed. The process of assembly is getting more refined as I make insects and other creatures.
I am especially proud of the interplay between the texture and glaze.
