This large piece was started over 6 years ago. It was my very first multi-part piece and is assembled with wire, string, and hot glue. It has individual pieces not including the antennae. It is mounted on a piece of honey locust hardword which holds it in the correct position. The feet are not attached put sit inside the leg in a sort of ball and socket joint and are held in place by gravity. All the legs are jointed which makes the sculpture less delicate and easier to transport. The piece is fired to bisque only. Currently I am working on a preying mantis using a similar technique but using stretchy cord like that used in assembling China dolls. Unfortunately the preying mantis is on a larger scale and is not stiff enough. I will likely add metal rods to keep the legs in place on that piece.
