This maquette is part of a short series of gorillas that I did in 2019. I saw an amazing sculpture on the antique roadshow. It was a small somewhat cubic bronze that was minimally shaped. I decided to explore using cubic shapes in my work. Each of the pieces started as a square cube constructed with slabs and was then altered to produce the sculpture. This is based on a photograph of a gorilla in a crouched position flexing its muscles and hooting loudly. I love the combination of the satin black finish and wiped back clay with visible grog.
