The fierce stare of this owl has a subtle sparkle because it was made out of micaceous wild clay and pit fired. The clay was collected locally in Virginia and the piece created in 2019. As you can see from the missing toes and mended breaks it is a very fragile piece. Unfortunately it ended up with carbon coring which occurs when there is not enough oxygen in the fire to burn off the carbon particles frequently found in wild clay. It creates a black core in a broken cross section of the ceramic and quite a brittle piece. It is one of my earliest sculptures which I did before I started to work with commercial clay.
