Leaf Cutter Ant

This was a semi-experimental piece based on a idea I had for an installation. One of the conspicuous animals that is ubiquitous in a lowland tropical ecosystem where I have spent time is the leaf cutter ant. Everywhere you look little lines of cut leaves are dancing along in a line headed for their farms. My idea is to do a line of these ants and wall mount them with paper leaves grasped in their jaws. You can see that there is a space for a leaf in the ant’s mouthparts. The piece is experimental in that I am not satisfied by leaving the legs as bare metal but I haven’t figured out how to make them in ceramic. Because I also work in wood I am considering making this a mixed media piece so the legs aren’t quite so uniformly thin. I have also considered making the leaves of handmade paper.
