Laying Giraffe

This piece is a finished version of a template I created for my series of workshops. Initially I created a standing giraffe adult and baby. Such long limbs were definitely a weak spot of the design. However there were many people interested in the giraffe pattern so I created this version.

I really enjoy the opportunity to play a bit with my finishes on these pieces as they are relatively quick to assemble. The finish was created by scrapping back the clay to expose the grog, adding layers of watercolor consistency underglaze, and finally using a Cuerda Seca like technique using Sharpie marker to outline the spots and hold in the very thin underglaze until it dried. This is how the gradients were created.
